Visit the States page to view a map of current State Motor Vehicle Administration Compliance. - Fulfilling a requirement of the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act of 2009 (the "CARS Act"), which was signed by the President on June 24, 2009, the Department of Transportation (DOT) published regulations on July 24, 2009, effective immediately, that require junk and salvage yards receiving motor vehicles traded-in under that CARS Program to report certain information about those vehicles to NMVTIS. The reporting obligations pursuant to the CARS regulations are separate from those contained in the NMVTIS regulations.
DOJ recognizes that some of the CARS Program requirements are different from those of NMVTIS, e.g., the reporting timeframes. To the extent, however, that junk and salvage yards include in their CARS reports to NMVTIS all of the information required under the NMVTIS regulations, such information so reported does not need to be reported again. Questions about the CARS Program should be directed to DOT at 405-954-3700.
Two reporting entities are available today to receive NMVTIS and CARS data: ISO and ADD; and to date, over 1 million VINs have been reported through both. Additional reporting options will soon be available.
DOJ will be posting related FAQs soon. - NMVTIS Third Party Reporting--Data Consolidator Update:
