  • Five Indicted in Auto Theft Conspiracy
A joint federal and state investigation resulted in an indictment in connection with an auto theft ring that allegedly netted more than 80 vehicles valued in excess of $1 million dollars. The indictment alleges the use of counterfeit motor vehicle titles for vehicle cloning. Read the DOJ press release.

If you have questions specific to information contained in this press release, please use the contact information in the press release or call the Office of Public Affairs at 202-514-2007.

  • DOJ Announces a Third Data Consolidator
The Department of Justice announces a third data consolidator, Autadex, to accept data from junk yards, salvage yards, auto recyclers, and insurance carriers. Please contact Autadex at 1-800-237-3463 for more information on reporting methods and other technical questions.

  • DOJ Announces Funding to Support NMVTIS
The Department of Justice announced more than $6.8 million was awarded to 12 states and to the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) to protect consumers from vehicle fraud and unsafe vehicles. Read the full press release.

  • CARS Program
Fulfilling a requirement of the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act of 2009 (the "CARS Act"), which was signed by the President on June 24, 2009, the Department of Transportation (DOT) published regulations on July 24, 2009, effective immediately, that require junk and salvage yards receiving motor vehicles traded-in under that CARS Program to report certain information about those vehicles to NMVTIS. The reporting obligations pursuant to the CARS regulations are separate from those contained in the NMVTIS regulations.

DOJ recognizes that some of the CARS Program requirements are different from those of NMVTIS, e.g., the reporting timeframes. To the extent, however, that junk and salvage yards include in their CARS reports to NMVTIS all of the information required under the NMVTIS regulations, such information so reported does not need to be reported again. Questions about the CARS Program should be directed to DOT at 405-954-3700.

Three reporting entities are available today to receive NMVTIS and CARS data: ISO, ADD, and Autadex; and to date, over 1 million VINs have been reported through both. Additional reporting options will soon be available.

  • NMVTIS Third Party Reporting—Data Consolidator Update
AAMVA has completed the procurement process for selecting an entity to serve as the third data consolidator for the NMVTIS Reporting Program. A formal announcement will be made soon. If you have any questions, please contact Vivienne Cameron at vcameron@aamva.org.
